William Shakespeare

If there one person who is best associated with poetry because of the worldwide recognition for his works, it is William Shakespeare. An English poet and playwright, Shakespeare was also considered as the greatest writer in English language. Sometimes, he is called the national poet of England as well as the “Bard of Avon.”

The works of Shakespeare, which is known all over the world have been played and performed in numerous hamlets, cities and countries for over 400 years. Despite of all this, the personal history of Shakespeare remained unclear. The main sources of his life history which historians can provide is through his works such as his poems, plays and sonnets; and the official documentations like court and church records.

The early plays of William Shakespeare were written using conventional style; with rhetorical phrases and complex metaphors which were not always aligned naturally to the characters or plots of the story. Despite of this, Shakespeare was really innovative. He adapted the traditional style and uses it for his own purpose while creating free flow of words. His earliest plays include Romeo and Juliet. He also wrote comedies such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Merchant of Venice. During his later period, Shakespeare wrote tragedies like Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello and King Lear.
