Petrarch

Poetry is a means of finding ways for communication which should be conducted with flexibility, openness as well as the unvarying willingness to listen. The materials used for this art form is the language in the most humane and naïve ways.

Petrarch, for which he is popularly known, is actually Francesco Petrarca. He was born in Arezzo, Central Italy on July 10, 1304. Petrarch was a celebrity in the entire Europe which was the result of his constant travel, usually for pleasure. For this reason, he is also called “The first tourist”.

Petrarch was also referred to as the Father of Humanism due to his work of reviving the interests in classical poetry, which was an attitude that was associated to the flourishing of Renaissance. Although it is not definitely known how the musical compositions might have sounded at that time, the attempts were made to reconstruct the melody of that era.

Petrarch was the earliest primary practitioner of sonnet, a type of poem that uses 14 lines and any of the formal rhyme systems. He was also credited for the development as well popularization of Italian sonnet which was later termed as Petrarchan sonnet. The significant influence of Petrarch in England began with Geoffrey Chaucer, who integrated the elements along with the translations off the works of Petrarch into his own version. The influence of Petrarch in English was seen all throughout the 19th century.
